Albuquerque Advances Plan for ‌Rapidly Built, Affordable Housing

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The City ‌of Albuquerque is moving forward with a plan to⁢ address vacant lots and increase housing options through the use of prefabricated “boxable” homes. City leaders ⁣toured a model⁣ home Friday, signaling progress toward a potential rollout of dozens of the⁤ units across city-owned properties.

The homes, ⁢manufactured in a Nevada factory and ⁢shipped ⁣to Albuquerque, are 300 ⁢square feet and cost approximately $100,000 each. ⁤Construction ‍crews can unfold and finish three to four of the homes per day, offering a significantly ⁤faster build time than customary construction.

“What’s crucial about ‌this product is that ⁣it can⁤ activate lots that have been vacant for years, that other developers really haven’t found⁣ a use for,” explained Terry Brunner,Director of the City of Albuquerque metro Redevelopment Agency. “So we’ve ⁤made these city-owned⁣ properties available ‍for a new use and it really fills ‌in these missing teeth around Albuquerque where you have⁣ these ‌long-standing⁣ vacant lots.”

The city anticipates finalizing a development agreement with the Piru Group within ⁣the next three months. This agreement would pave the way for the construction of multiple homes on three city-owned lots, including a site located at Central Ave. and Old Coors Road. The initiative aims to revitalize underutilized⁤ spaces and provide ‌affordable housing solutions within ‌the city.
