Citroën targets €15,000 for new electric 2CV prototype
Citroën is targeting a retail price of approximately 15,000 euros for a new electric prototype of its iconic 2CV, aiming for a market launch in 2028. The upcoming prototype draws heavy inspiration from the original 1948 model, featuring rounded front shapes, prominent fenders, circular headlights, and a hood surface that echoes the historic vehicle produced in Mangualde until 1990.
Retro Styling Meets the Stellantis E-Car Program
The exterior details bridge past and present through elements such as classic rotary door handles, indicators placed near the rear pillars, and wheels resembling closed steel rims. According to Motor1 Brasil, the vehicle will position itself above the quadricycle Ami and below the C3. Xavier Chardon, CEO of the brand, stated that the new 2CV aims to restore purchasing power to European consumers and function as an accessible car adapted to contemporary needs. Other images reveal a characteristic closed rear pillar design with a direction indicator light, four-bolt wheels, and Michelin tires featuring a retro-style logo as a nod to the historical ties between the tire maker and the development of the original 2CV, alongside an egg carton image referencing the historic development brief.
This initiative is part of the Stellantis E-Car program, which is designed to develop a new category of small, simple, and affordable electric vehicles in Europe. The production of these vehicles is slated to take place at the Pomigliano d’Arco factory in Italy, sharing a dedicated platform with upcoming small electric offerings from other group brands like Fiat.
Prototype Debuts at Paris Motor Show
The prototype is scheduled to make its public appearance at the Paris Motor Show. French manufacturers are leaning heavily into their historical heritage at the event, using classic nameplates to connect with European consumers amid growing competition from new arrivals.
While technical specifications regarding battery capacity, power output, and driving range remain under wraps, the overarching philosophy focuses on reducing weight, complexity, and cost for daily urban commuting.
