Cinema Fire Alarm Triggers Emergency Evacuation in Northern Norway

June 20, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

A fire alarm was activated at the Tromsø kino during a screening of “The Batman” on October 25, 2023, according to local authorities, prompting the evacuation of approximately 150 attendees and staff. The incident occurred at 8:17 p.m. local time, with the cinema’s management confirming a technical malfunction in the building’s ventilation system as the cause.

The Tromsø Police Department stated that no injuries were reported, and emergency services arrived within seven minutes of the alarm’s activation. A representative for the cinema, Nordlys Kino, issued a statement saying, “We take all safety concerns seriously and are cooperating fully with the investigation.” The fire department conducted a site inspection and cleared the building by 9:45 p.m.

Residents near the cinema described hearing the alarm and seeing smoke bills rising from the rooftop, though officials later clarified that the smoke was likely from the ventilation system’s exhaust. A local news outlet, Nordlys, reported that the screening was halted mid-film, with patrons directed to a nearby parking lot for safety. No further details about the technical failure were provided by the cinema’s management.

Norwegian safety regulators have not yet commented on the incident. The cinema, which opened in 2018, has a history of minor maintenance issues, according to public records. A 2021 audit by the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection noted “outdated electrical systems” but stated no immediate risks were identified. The current investigation into the October 25 event is being led by the Tromsø Fire Department and the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority.

Local lawmakers have called for a broader review of safety protocols in public venues. “This incident highlights the need for regular, independent safety checks in all public spaces,” said Trond H. Olsen, a member of the Tromsø municipal council. The cinema’s parent company, Nordlys Entertainment, has not yet released a detailed timeline of the malfunction or its potential financial impact.

The next scheduled inspection of the cinema’s systems is set for December 1, 2023, according to the Norwegian Building and Construction Authority. Meanwhile, the Tromsø Police have confirmed that no criminal charges are being pursued at this time.
