Cinecittà Revival: Netflix, Denzel Washington & Record Profits in 2025
Filming began this week in Rome for a live-action series adaptation of the popular video game franchise Assassin’s Creed, Netflix announced on March 20, 2026. Production is taking place primarily at Cinecittà Studios, with the existing Ancient Rome set being expanded to fully immerse viewers in the historical period.
The series is set in 64 A.D. And will tell an original story centered on the conflict between two secret factions – one seeking control through manipulation, and the other fighting to preserve free will. The adaptation marks the first series to be developed under Netflix’s partnership with Ubisoft, the creator of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, which has sold over 230 million copies worldwide.
The ensemble cast includes Lola Petticrew, Toby Wallace, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Nabhann Rizwan, Claes Bang, Noomi Rapace, Ramzy Bedia, Sean Harris, Corrado Invernizzi, Sandra Guldberg-Kampp, Youssef Kerkour, and Mirren Mack. Four additional recurring cast members were recently added, though their names have not yet been publicly released.
Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of Cinecittà, stated that the studio is honored to host the production. “This reflects the credibility and reputation that Cinecittà holds worldwide, as well as the professional guarantee we provide for any type of production, of any scale or genre,” Cacciamani said. She also highlighted the collaboration between Cinecittà’s crews and set design department to create spectacular sets.
Cinecittà Studios reported a net profit of 1.5 million euros before taxes for 2025, marking a return to profitability after financial adjustments in 2022 and 2023. The studio’s commercial revenue increased by 8.9 million euros compared to 2024, reaching over 30.4 million euros. EBITDA also saw a significant increase, reaching 14 million euros compared to 7 million euros in 2024. Over 110 million euros has been invested in the studios since July 2024, adding to 89 million euros previously committed. Cinecittà plans to offer an additional 21,000 square meters of space to productions by June, bringing the total to 25 sound stages and ten hectares of outdoor areas.
The studio attributes its financial turnaround to cost reductions, including over five million euros in savings from internalizing services and streamlining labor costs through increased personnel efficiency.
Alongside the Assassin’s Creed series, Cinecittà is also preparing to host a production directed by Antoine Fuqua starring Denzel Washington, focusing on Hannibal.
