Christiane Amanpour to Leave CNN After 43 Years
“After many months of thought and a few sleepless nights, I have decided to separate from CNN, my partner of 43 fantastic years!” Christiane Amanpour said in a statement announcing her departure from the network next June.
Amanpour, 68, has hosted her nightly interview program on CNN International since 2009. That daily broadcast will transition to a weekly schedule in January before concluding in May, while her reporting and travel for the network will continue through June.
To say this marks the end of an era doesn’t even cut it.@amanpour has been synonymous with CNN & with top-tier international reporting for decades. I grew up admiring her, pinched myself every time I got to share a screen with her & have been grateful on so many occasions for…
A Gradual Exit Under New Ownership
The departure marks the first planned resignation of a CNN reporter since Paramount Skydance formally took over Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this month.
CNN Chairman Mark Thompson addressed the news in a memo to staff on Monday morning. “Christiane has thought carefully about this decision, and she and I have been discussing it for some months,” Thompson wrote, as reported by NBC News. Thompson described her as one of the world’s most respected journalists and noted that the network will take time to celebrate her career prior to her departure.
"From my very first big exciting assignment covering the First Gulf War, to the horrors of the Bosnian War, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran and all the points in between, it’s the teams and the camaraderie that counted so much, as we together battled to seek the facts, the…”
Decades on the Front Lines of Global Conflict
Amanpour joined CNN in the early 1980s and established her career covering major international crises. Her assignments include the Persian Gulf War, the Bosnian War, the Rwandan genocide, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Arab Spring, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the war in Gaza, according to NBC News.
Reflecting on her tenure, Amanpour credited her production teams and field crews. “From my very first big exciting assignment covering the First Gulf War, to the horrors of the Bosnian War, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran and all the points in between, it’s the teams and the camaraderie that counted so much,” she said in her statement.

Future Projects Beyond CNN
While her daily presence on television is drawing to a close, Amanpour intends to remain active in media, as she plans to pursue new projects and continue producing her podcast, “The Ex Files,” which she co-hosts with her former husband, Jamie Rubin, and produces with Global. Her PBS program, “Amanpour & Company,” is also set to conclude in December.
