Chris Rock says he refused to pay for lawyer for Roger Logan

Chris Rock says he refused to pay for lawyer for Roger Logan

October 7, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Comedian Chris Rock revealed in a New York Times interview that he refused to pay for a lawyer for Roger Logan, who spent years in prison for a murder he did not commit, stating that the decision still haunts him.

A Childhood Friend Behind Bars

Speaking on the publication’s “The Interview” series on an unspecified date, Rock addressed questions regarding forgiveness and who receives it. “Hey, man, I’m Black. When you’re Black, white people believe every accusation is a conviction,” Rock said, according to The New York Times.

The filmmaker recalled his connection to the case, explaining that Logan was a friend from his youth and the brother of one of his best friends. Logan ultimately served years behind bars for a crime he did not commit. “And here’s the weird thing: His brother used to plead with me to pay for a lawyer for Roger, and I never did it,” Rock stated.

A Strict Personal Policy on Legal Fees

Rock explained that he maintained a strict personal policy regarding legal fees during that period. While he routinely covered other expenses for acquaintances, including mortgages and educational costs, he drew a firm line at legal representation. “I always had a no-lawyer thing,” Rock said, noting that legal battles are unpredictable. “There’s a bunch I’ve paid for — education and all sorts of shit. I always stay out of lawyers because it’s so open-ended.”

The realization of what transpired continues to weigh on the comedian. “And it still fucks with me,” Rock said of his choice. “I had the means to help him and I didn’t. I don’t know if we could’ve got him out or not, but still.”

Systemic Flaws in the Justice System

Reflecting on the broader societal implications of the case, Rock drew attention to systemic flaws in the justice system. “So all that to say, Black men get accused of shit they didn’t do all the time, every day,” he said. “We let Black men out of jail and go: ‘Whoops! That Black guy just did 30 years — too bad.’”

Unanswered Questions on Logan’s Release

Public records and further details regarding Roger Logan’s release date were not specified in the interview.
