Chinese New Year 2026: Year of the Fire Horse & Chunwan Gala

February 17, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Madrid is celebrating the Lunar New Year with a series of cultural events beginning Tuesday, February 17th, and continuing through early March. The festivities mark the start of the Year of the Horse, specifically the Year of the Fire Horse, a designation not seen since 1966. The celebrations are centered in Usera, Madrid’s Chinatown, which is home to a significant portion of the city’s estimated 60,000 residents of Chinese origin. The program includes a large parade scheduled for the Parque de Pradolongo, alongside concerts, workshops, exhibitions, and traditional Chinese cuisine. Fireworks are too planned as part of the celebrations. The Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar, with a history spanning over 4,000 years. Unlike the Gregorian calendar’s fixed January 1st start, the Lunar New Year’s date varies annually, determined by the cycles of the moon, and sun. This year’s observance begins on February 17th and extends for approximately fifteen days, culminating around March 5th with the Lantern Festival. The Year of the Horse is associated with freedom, speed, and courage, while the element of fire symbolizes passion, vitality, and a degree of unpredictability. Those born under this sign are often described as charismatic and adventurous. Celebrations incorporate imagery reflecting these qualities, including red dragons and flame-themed lanterns. Madrid’s city council has made available a downloadable poster for the Año Nuevo Chino 2026 celebrations. The festivities aim to engage not only the city’s Chinese community but also all residents and visitors interested in experiencing this vibrant cultural tradition. The program of events is available on the official website. The celebrations in Madrid coincide with the Chunwan, the CCTV-broadcast Spring Festival Gala, which attracts an audience exceeding one billion viewers. This year’s gala featured performances by dozens of humanoid robots, dressed in regional attire, performing acrobatics, kung fu, and dance routines.
