China’s Stance on Iran War: Stability & Non-Interference – Duke Kunshan’s Quelch

March 24, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

BEIJING – Duke Kunshan University Executive Vice Chancellor John Quelch observed that China is consistently reiterating its stance of stability and non-interference as the conflict in Iran continues, during remarks at the China Development Forum on Monday.

Quelch’s comments came during a session focused on global economic risks, according to a report from Bloomberg. He noted the consistent messaging from Beijing, even as geopolitical tensions escalate in the Middle East. The forum, an annual event, brings together leading international business figures and Chinese government officials.

Quelch, who assumed his role at Duke Kunshan University in January 2024, previously served as dean of the University of Miami Herbert Business School from 2017 to 2022. Prior to that, he held positions at Harvard Business School and the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai, demonstrating a long-standing engagement with both Western and Chinese academic and business communities.

The China Development Forum’s focus this year included discussions on navigating a complex global landscape, with particular attention paid to the implications of ongoing conflicts and geopolitical uncertainties for international trade and investment. China’s position on the Iran situation has largely centered on calls for de-escalation and a negotiated settlement, while emphasizing respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.

Quelch also holds the position of John deButts Professor of the Practice at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business. His experience extends to corporate governance, having served on the boards of numerous companies in both the United States and the United Kingdom, including WPP, easyJet, and Reebok International. He currently advises several startup companies in the fintech and edtech sectors.

As of Tuesday, March 24, 2026, Chinese officials have not altered their public position on the Iran conflict, continuing to emphasize the demand for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomatic channels. Further discussions on the matter are scheduled to take place at a follow-up session of the China Development Forum next month.
