China’s Education Office in Tokyo: Dreadnought Book & Cafe

A branch office of the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo, referred to as the “Education Department,” located in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, has been a casual meeting place for individuals discussing the works of Karl Marx and Mao Zedong, according to a recent social media post.

The post, made on X (formerly Twitter) by Books&Cafe Dreadnought/Suzuki Trading Co. (@suzukitaitou), noted that people who frequented the coffee shop would occasionally visit the embassy office and engage in conversations about the collected works of Marx and Mao. The post, which garnered 49 likes as of Wednesday, March 25, 2026, does not elaborate on the nature of these discussions or the identities of the individuals involved.

The “Education Department” is identified as an outpost of the Chinese Embassy, according to the social media post. The Chinese Embassy in Japan is located in Tokyo’s Minato ward, with a separate consular section in Shinagawa ward, according to official embassy listings. The embassy’s contact information lists a Public Affairs Counselor, Zhang Yibo, and a Cultural Counselor, Chen Qian, among other officials.

The embassy’s website details various departments, including the Political Department, led by Counselor Minister Luo Songtao, and the Economic and Commercial Department, headed by Counselor Luo Xiaomei. The Education Department is led by Counselor Minister Du Kewe, according to the embassy’s organizational chart.

The Japan-China Friendship Association held a spring festival gala in February 2026, with the Japanese Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCCI) as a sponsor, according to a news release from the JCCCI. The JCCCI, established in 1999, represents businesses run by the Japanese-Chinese community and aims to promote economic globalization through its network.

Recent diplomatic activity includes a report exchange meeting on the “100 Japanese University Students View China” project, and attendance by Counselor Minister Shi Yong at a Japan-China Friendship gathering in Iwami Town, Tottori Prefecture. Counselor Minister Du Kewe as well attended a welcoming reception for a Beijing municipal delegation visiting Japan, and Counselor Minister Du Kewe attended the 10th HSK Chinese Proficiency Test and Study Abroad Fair.
