China Surpasses Japan in Global Auto Sales: BYD Leads the Charge

March 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The Chinese automotive brand BYD showcased its flagship model, the HAN, at the 2022 Paris International Motor Show held at the Porte de Versailles exhibition center in Paris, France, on October 17, 2022. The presentation comes as China surpassed Japan as the world’s leading novel vehicle market, according to a report from the Nikkei newspaper citing data from market research firm MarkLines.

China’s new vehicle sales reached approximately 27 million units in 2022, a roughly 10% increase from the previous year. Japanese automakers, in contrast, saw a slight decrease in sales, totaling around 25 million vehicles. This marks the first time Japan has fallen to second place in global new car sales since 2000.

While Toyota Motor Corporation remained the world’s top-selling individual automaker with 11.32 million vehicles sold, the rise of Chinese manufacturers was notable. BYD and Geely Group both recorded higher sales figures than Honda and Nissan. Within the top 20 global automotive brands, China held six positions, exceeding Japan’s five.

BYD highlighted its progress at the Paris Motor Show, marking two years since its initial full European debut at the same event. Stella Li, BYD Executive Vice President, stated the company has a research and development team of over 102,000 engineers across 11 global research institutes. The company announced its nine millionth new-energy vehicle had rolled off the production line, a milestone reached significantly faster than the first million, which took 13 years.

The Paris Motor Show also served as the European debut for the BYD SEALION 7, a mid-size, all-electric SUV. BYD is expanding its dealership network in Europe, including Germany, as it seeks to capitalize on growing demand for electric vehicles. However, recent growth in the Chinese market has shown signs of slowing, with BYD’s February 2023 sales down 40% compared to the same period the previous year, according to the Nikkei report.

The continued momentum of Chinese automakers will depend on their success in overseas markets, including Europe and Southeast Asia. Chinese companies are increasingly looking to establish production facilities outside of China to enhance cost competitiveness.
