Chilean Fishermen & Health Experts Launch Campaign to promote Jurel as “Superfood”
biobío, Chile – A new campaign is underway to elevate the Chilean jurel (Pacific jack mackerel) to national prominence as a key contributor to cardiovascular health. Launched by industrial fishermen from the Biobío region in partnership with Dr. Sebastián Ugarte and chef Álvaro Barrientos, “Jurel Day” will be celebrated for the first time on September 25th. The initiative coincides with the lead-up to World Heart Day on September 29th, emphasizing the fish’s high Omega 3 and antioxidant content.
The campaign, operating under the motto “as the Chilean jurel is always in our hearts, let’s join and celebrate it,” aims to increase consumption of the sustainably sourced fish – certified with the MSC blue seal – and highlight its culinary versatility. Organizers hope to position jurel not only as a staple of Chilean culture but as a readily available, affordable, and nutritious “superfood” with proven benefits in preventing cardiovascular disease.
The campaign will utilize social media, featuring recipes and health details delivered with the support of various influencers, and will see Dr.Ugarte and Chef Barrientos collaborating in the kitchen. The biobío region, considered the “world capital of the jurel,” is home to a food industry dedicated to processing the fish for human consumption.
