Child Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash on I-10 in West Phoenix

Child Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash on I-10 in West Phoenix

October 7, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A young child died following a three-vehicle collision on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near 43rd Avenue in west Phoenix. The incident prompted state troopers to completely shut down the freeway while emergency responders and investigators worked the scene.

Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers spearheaded the on-scene investigation, while the Arizona Department of Transportation managed extensive freeway closures and redirected eastbound traffic at 43rd Avenue.

I-10 Closure Disrupts West Valley Commuter Traffic

The collision created significant commuter disruptions across the West Valley corridor. State troopers restricted all eastbound traffic at the 43rd Avenue interchange, forcing motorists to seek alternate routes around the crash site. Officials from the Arizona Department of Transportation monitored the resulting congestion while investigators documented evidence across the multi-lane highway.

This incident follows a series of major disruptions along the same stretch of roadway. A fatal two-vehicle crash near Buckeye triggered I-10 closures, and a multi-vehicle pileup near Bullard Avenue previously sent ten people to the hospital, according to Hoodline. The 43rd Avenue interchange has a documented history of severe wrecks, including a January 2023 incident involving a speeding sedan, a commercial semi-truck, and a pickup truck that left a child in extremely critical condition and closed all westbound lanes, FOX 10 Phoenix reported.

Ongoing Investigation Into Impairment and Safety Factors

Investigators with the Arizona Department of Public Safety are actively examining whether driver impairment played a role in the Tuesday collision.

Maricopa County recorded 594 traffic deaths, according to state highway safety figures. While state troopers manage the immediate aftermath and forensic reconstruction of the Tuesday pileup, formal determinations regarding contributing factors, citations, or potential criminal charges depend on the conclusion of the ongoing DPS inquiry.
