Child Hospitalized with Suspected Meningitis B in Vila Velha, Brazil

February 13, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

A three-year-vintage child is currently hospitalized in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, with suspected meningite tipo B, according to the Espírito Santo State Health Department (Sesa). The case, identified at the Hospital Infantil e Maternidade Alzir Bernardino Alves (Himaba), is under investigation, and the child is in isolation.

Sesa confirmed that individuals who had close contact with the patient have received preventative medication, following established protocols for this type of occurrence. The suspected case was reported to the e-SUS Surveillance in Health system, as mandated by the Ministry of Health.

The Health Department stated the child is being monitored by a multidisciplinary team and is receiving care according to clinical and assistance protocols. Sesa has not released information regarding the child’s municipality of origin or vaccination history, citing patient privacy regulations.

Pediatra Karoliny Veronese has cautioned about the potentially lethal nature of the disease. Meningite tipo B is a bacterial illness considered serious and transmitted through respiratory droplets.

The Hospital Infantil e Maternidade Alzir Bernardino Alves (Himaba) also recently treated a 12-year-old autistic adolescent who was a victim of sexual assault, though this case is separate from the current meningite investigation.

Sesa has not yet released further details regarding the ongoing investigation.
