Chiefs Stay Alive in Playoff Hunt with Overtime Win, But Face Uphill Battle
Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Chiefs kept their Super bowl hopes flickering Sunday night, overcoming a 20-9 deficit to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 23-20 in overtime. The victory, however, doesn’t immediately translate to playoff positioning for the defending AFC champions.
Despite improving to 6-5, the Chiefs currently sit 10th in the AFC standings and have lost a crucial tiebreaker to the Houston Texans, who hold the advantage in conference victories. Patrick Mahomes, despite throwing for 352 yards and connecting on key passes to Xavier Worthy (31 yards) and Rashee Rice (21 yards) to set up the game-winning field goal, was held out of the endzone and pressured throughout the night, facing four sacks and one interception. Harrison Butker ultimately sealed the win with a clutch field goal.
The path to the playoffs won’t be easy. Kansas City faces a challenging schedule down the stretch, with three of their remaining six games against teams currently with winning records. A particularly tough test awaits on Christmas Day against the AFC’s second-seeded Denver Broncos, alongside three divisional matchups.
However, the Chiefs boast a strong 5-1 record at home this season, and all three games against winning teams are scheduled to be played at Arrowhead Stadium, offering a potential advantage as they fight for a postseason berth.
