Chiefs Special Teams Coach Dave Toub Disagrees with Trump‘s Criticism of NFL Kickoff Rules
Kansas City Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub publicly disagreed with former President Donald Trump’s assessment of the NFL’s altered kickoff rules, stating they are making the game safer. “I think the kickoff is much safer now,” Toub said, according to the Kansas City Star. “Take that for what it’s worth. I hope he hears it.”
the NFL modified kickoff rules in consecutive offseasons aiming to improve player safety and increase the number of kickoffs.League data indicates a nearly 43% reduction in documented head injuries on kickoffs during the first year of the new “dynamic kickoff” implementation. Trump, however, has repeatedly criticized the changes, calling them “terrible” and “demeaning” during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. He argued the new rules haven’t improved safety and diminish the “pageantry of the game.”
Toub, who also holds the title of assistant head coach under Andy Reid, has spent 13 seasons with the Chiefs. He has mentored kicker Harrison Butker, a 2017 draft pick and prominent Trump supporter, who ranks among the franchise’s all-time leading scorers. Butker, along with golfer Bryson DeChambeau, attended a White House event in July to promote the reinstatement of presidential Physical Fitness standards in public schools.
