Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Still Keen on Igor Thiago Despite New Contract

February 15, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Chelsea are continuing to monitor Brentford striker Igor Thiago, despite the player recently signing a new contract that extends his stay at the Gtech Community Stadium until 2031, according to reports from TEAMtalk.

The Blues, who brought in Joao Pedro and Liam Delap last summer and are preparing for the arrival of Emmanuel Emegha this summer, appear to be assessing their forward options despite recent investment in the position. Pedro has impressed with ten Premier League goals this season, but Delap has struggled for form, netting just two goals in 24 appearances, with only one in the league.

Chelsea’s interest in Thiago comes as they seek to bolster their attacking options, with the Brazilian currently the second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League with 17 goals, trailing only Erling Haaland of Manchester City. Bayern Munich are likewise reportedly tracking the 24-year-old, according to multiple reports, including ESPN and Footballtransfers.com.

Brentford’s decision to offer Thiago a new long-term contract, with an option for a further year, is believed by some to be a strategic move to protect the player’s value, given the significant interest from other clubs. The forward’s valuation is currently estimated at around £30m by Transfermarkt.

The arrival of Emmanuel Emegha, who scored 14 goals in Ligue 1 last season while playing under Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior, is expected to add competition in the forward line. Emegha’s 6ft 5in frame is expected to provide a different dimension to Chelsea’s attack.

Jason Cundy has suggested that a loan move could be beneficial for Liam Delap, but with Emegha’s imminent arrival, the prospect of Chelsea pursuing another striker this summer appears increasingly complex.

Thiago, who previously played for Club Brugge, enjoyed a breakthrough season with Brentford, demonstrating his qualities as a quick, strong, and aerially capable striker with a proven goalscoring record. He is also considered efficient in hold-up play and possesses a strong penalty-taking ability.
