Chelsea Ban Boosts Liverpool’s Chance to Keep Teen Star Josh Abe
Chelsea’s recent admission of historical breaches of Premier League rules, resulting in a suspended one-year transfer ban and a nine-month academy transfer ban, has unexpectedly provided Liverpool with a potential advantage in retaining one of their highly-rated youth prospects.
The Premier League sanctioned Chelsea with a £10.75 million fine and the academy restrictions after acknowledging violations concerning payments to third parties. While the senior team transfer ban remains suspended, the immediate implementation of the academy ban prevents the club from acquiring players from rival academies during the upcoming summer transfer window.
This development is particularly significant for Liverpool, as Chelsea had reportedly identified 15-year-old Josh Abe as a key target. According to the Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele, a specialist in covering Liverpool, Chelsea’s pursuit of Abe was, in part, motivated by a desire for retribution following Liverpool’s successful acquisition of Rio Ngumoha several years ago.
Abe is widely considered a standout talent within his age group, attracting interest not only from Chelsea but also from fellow Premier League clubs Manchester City and Arsenal. Further complicating matters, Abe was observed touring Real Madrid’s Bernabéu stadium earlier this year, sparking speculation about a potential move to the Spanish giants and his representation by Tyler Alexander-Arnold, brother of Trent Alexander-Arnold, through the PLG Agency.
Steele reported that Chelsea’s inability to sign academy players due to the imposed ban significantly improves Liverpool’s position in their efforts to retain Abe. “With my Liverpool cap on, my first thought when I saw the news about Chelsea being handed an academy transfer ban this week was about Reds prospect Joshua Abe,” Steele wrote. “Chelsea are currently out of that race because of their ban, however, which is a big help for Liverpool’s case to keep him, though others still loom large.”
Liverpool are actively working to persuade Abe to remain at Anfield, showcasing a clear pathway to first-team opportunities. The club recently allowed Abe to train with the senior squad, a move interpreted by some as a deliberate attempt to demonstrate their commitment to his development.
