Cheaper Summer Vacations: 6 Budget-Friendly Destinations

March 27, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Travelers seeking more affordable summer vacation options are increasingly turning to destinations offering value beyond traditional hotspots, according to a recent report. The shift comes as costs for popular locations continue to rise, prompting a reevaluation of summer travel plans for many.

The Washington Post identified six destinations offering potential savings for summer 2026: Portugal, Puerto Rico, Florida’s Gulf Coast, Greece, Croatia and Canada. These locations present a mix of cultural experiences, natural beauty, and comparatively lower expenses for accommodations, dining, and activities.

Portugal, highlighted in the report, is experiencing a surge in popularity due to its affordability and diverse offerings. From the historic cities of Lisbon and Porto to the beaches of the Algarve, Portugal provides a range of experiences without the premium price tag associated with other Western European destinations. Greece and Croatia are also presented as attractive alternatives within Europe, offering similar benefits of historical sites, coastal scenery, and lower costs.

Closer to home, Puerto Rico offers U.S. Citizens a convenient and affordable Caribbean getaway, eliminating passport requirements and currency exchange fees. Florida’s Gulf Coast, particularly areas outside of the heavily touristed Miami and Orlando regions, provides beach access and attractions at a lower cost. Canada, benefiting from a favorable exchange rate for U.S. Travelers, is also positioned as a budget-friendly option, particularly for those interested in outdoor activities and national park visits.

The changing preferences of tourists are also impacting established destinations. In Hawaii, for example, the closure of a long-running luau signifies a shift away from traditional tourist experiences towards more modern and diverse attractions. This trend suggests a broader re-evaluation of what constitutes a desirable vacation experience, with travelers increasingly seeking authenticity and value.

Experts suggest that booking flights well in advance – specifically, between January and March – can yield significant savings for 2026 travel. This timing aligns with periods of lower demand and increased competition among airlines. However, the report does not specify how these savings will be impacted by potential fluctuations in fuel costs or geopolitical events.

The increasing crowds at national parks are also prompting a search for alternative ways to experience the outdoors. Strategies such as visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) or exploring lesser-known parks are gaining traction among travelers seeking a more peaceful and immersive experience. These approaches aim to mitigate the impact of overtourism and preserve the natural beauty of these protected areas.
