ChatGPT Market Research: Get Reports in Minutes with AI
OpenAI has upgraded its Deep Research tool within ChatGPT, now powered by the GPT-5.2 model, offering enhanced capabilities for market research and report generation. Previously operating on an older model, the update aims to streamline the often-complex process of data collection and analysis for business ventures and other research-intensive tasks.
The Deep Research feature, available to all paid ChatGPT users, allows users to direct an AI agent to compile comprehensive reports on specified topics. Dan McCarthy, an associate professor of marketing at the University of Maryland, explains that the tool can significantly reduce the time spent on initial market validation, competitor identification and customer persona development. Instead of manual searches, users can leverage the AI to synthesize information and provide cited sources.
To utilize Deep Research, users access the feature through the plus button within the ChatGPT interface, selecting “More” and then “Deep Research.” The effectiveness of the tool hinges on the specificity of the prompt provided. McCarthy suggests a verbose approach, and even recommends using ChatGPT itself to refine the prompt, ensuring all relevant areas are addressed. He advocates for a conversational approach, using voice mode to explain the desired outcome to ChatGPT and then asking the chatbot to suggest the optimal questions to ask.
The upgrade to GPT-5.2 represents a significant improvement in the tool’s analytical capabilities. The latest iteration allows users to prioritize specific websites during the search process, enabling a more focused and relevant information gathering experience. This feature addresses concerns raised about the reliability and relevance of information sourced by AI, as noted in recent reports on the limitations of AI in market analysis. A recent report from Morningstar cautioned that while AI can perform many tasks, robust market analysis remains a challenge.
The emergence of AI-powered tools like Deep Research is coinciding with broader shifts in the marketing landscape. According to Harvard Business Review, AI is upending marketing on multiple fronts, impacting both strategy, and execution. Forrester research indicates that consumers are beginning to form opinions about advertising within ChatGPT, suggesting a growing awareness of AI’s role in content delivery and potential influence.
