Charlton Athletic Fan Dies During Match, Game Immediately Postponed

A somber atmosphere descended upon The Valley today as a Charlton Athletic supporter tragically died following a medical emergency during the EFL Championship match against Portsmouth. The game, which kicked off at lunchtime, was halted in the 12th minute as medical personnel attended to the fan, and was later officially postponed.
The incident brought an immediate stop to play, with players from both sides visibly distressed. medical staff worked diligently to provide assistance, but sadly, their efforts where unsuccessful. At the time the match was paused, the score remained 0-0.
Charlton Athletic released a statement expressing their profound sadness. ”the club is utterly devastated to learn of the passing of a supporter during today’s match,” the statement read. “We would like to thank our medical staff, first responders, and the supporters and players of both Charlton and Portsmouth for their patience and understanding during this incredibly difficult time. Our heartfelt condolences are with the supporter’s family and friends.”
Captain Greg Docherty of Charlton Athletic took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his grief. “Absolutely devastating news… from all of the players at the club our thoughts are with his family and friends through this extremely difficult time,” he posted, accompanied by a broken heart emoji.
Portsmouth football club also issued a statement,echoing the sentiments of Charlton Athletic. “Everyone at Portsmouth Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a Charlton Athletic supporter during today’s match,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family and friends at this difficult time.”
The English Football League (EFL) also offered its condolences via X, stating: “Our deepest condolences go out to the supporter’s family, friends and all @CAFCofficial at this incredibly difficult time.”
Details regarding the rescheduling of the match will be announced by both clubs and the EFL in due course. Though, the focus remains on supporting the family and friends of the deceased supporter during this time of immense grief.
