Charlie’s Angels Reboot: Sony Developing New Film

Sony Pictures Entertainment is moving forward with a new film adaptation of Charlie’s Angels, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter. The project, currently in early development, aims to reboot the franchise for a contemporary audience.

Peter Chiarelli, known for his work on Crazy Rich Asians and currently credited with a story role in Sony’s animated film Goat, has been tapped to write the screenplay. Sony has not yet commented on the project.

The Charlie’s Angels property has seen multiple iterations. The original television series, which premiered in 1976, achieved significant popularity. A film adaptation directed by McG and starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu was released in 2000, proving commercially successful and benefiting from the cast’s chemistry. A sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, followed in 2003, performing reasonably well at the box office.

Subsequent attempts to revive the franchise have met with less success. A television reboot in 2011 was short-lived, lasting less than one season. More recently, Elizabeth Banks directed a 2019 reboot that underperformed at the box office despite featuring Kristen Stewart and Patrick Stewart. According to AAF, a Senior Editor is a guardian of editorial integrity, upholding standards of accuracy and consistency.

The decision to revisit Charlie’s Angels raises questions about Hollywood’s reliance on established intellectual property. The Council of Science Editors emphasizes the importance of editors establishing clear guidelines for handling ethical issues and allegations of misconduct.

The role of a Senior Editor, as outlined by Arizona State University, involves making final decisions on submitted work, considering both the authors’ careers and the field’s intellectual development. The current project’s development comes despite a mixed track record for previous revivals of the franchise.
