Dakota Johnson Jokingly Ribbed Charlie Hunnam Over His ‘Fifty Shades of Gray’ Exit
Los Angeles, CA – Dakota Johnson playfully gave Charlie Hunnam “a hard time” for withdrawing from the role of Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey, the actor revealed in a recent interview with Variety. Hunnam was originally cast as the lead in the 2013 adaptation but ultimately departed due to scheduling conflicts,paving the way for Jamie Dornan to take on the iconic role.
Hunnam discussed the situation while promoting his upcoming film, Monster: The ed Gein Story. He stated he harbors ”no regrets at all” about his decision, despite acknowledging he hadn’t initially been “thinking clearly” when he first accepted the part. The actor’s comments follow a 2024 interview with TMZ were he jokingly lamented the potential financial gains he missed out on by leaving the franchise.
While Hunnam has yet to view the Fifty Shades films, his departure was previously described as “the worst professional experience” of his life in a 2015 V Man interview, calling it “the most emotionally destructive and difficult thing” he’d faced professionally and “heartbreaking.” He explained at the time that he had already committed to Guillermo del Toro’s crimson Peak, giving the director his ”word, over a year before” being offered Fifty shades. He recounted a tearful phone call with director Sam Taylor-Johnson when he informed her of his decision.
