Charlie Hunnam Delves Into the Disturbing Psychology of Ed Gein for Netflix’s ‘Monster’
Los Angeles, CA – September 30, 2025 - Charlie Hunnam underwent a profound physical and psychological transformation to portray serial killer ed Gein in Netflix’s upcoming limited series, Monster, currently in post-production. The actor revealed the challenging process of embodying the notorious figure, known for his gruesome crimes and the macabre discoveries made at his Plainfield, Wisconsin, farm in 1957. Hunnam’s preparation involved extensive research into Gein’s life, mental state, and the societal context that shaped him, aiming for a nuanced portrayal beyond the sensationalism surrounding the case.
The series, directed by Paco Cabezas, promises a chilling exploration of Gein’s descent into madness and the events that led to the unearthing of his horrifying collection of human remains. The case captivated the nation and heavily influenced iconic horror films like Psycho and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Hunnam’s commitment to the role underscores Netflix’s ambition to deliver a psychologically complex true-crime drama, offering a disturbing look into the origins of a uniquely terrifying American criminal.
Filmed at the historic Robert Taylor Ranch, reimagined by designer Malcolm James Kutner and represented by Rochelle Atlas Maize of Nourmand & Associates, the production utilized vintage clothing to enhance the authenticity of the period. Styling was overseen by Warren Alfie Baker of The Wall Group, with grooming by Kim Verbeck, also of The Wall Group. Hunnam’s wardrobe included pieces from Kincaid Archive, RRL, Calvin Klein, Vintage Levi’s, and Frye boots, sourced largely from the World Vintage Showroom LA.
Hunnam described the experience as emotionally draining, stating, “It was a really tough headspace to occupy. You have to understand the person, even if you abhor what they’ve done.” He emphasized the importance of avoiding caricature and instead focusing on the factors that contributed to Gein’s disturbed psyche. Monster is expected to premiere on netflix in late 2025 or early 2026, offering a disturbing and thought-provoking examination of one of America’s most infamous criminals.
