Charles Oakley Lawsuit Against Madison Square Garden Dismissed for Third Time

August 15, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

On August 14, 2026, a federal judge dismissed for the third time a long-standing lawsuit filed by former New York Knicks forward Charles Oakley against Madison Square Garden (MSG) and owner James Dolan. The court’s decision effectively ends the current legal battle stemming from Oakley’s 2017 ejection from the arena.

Judicial Rulings and the End of Litigation

Circuit Judge Richard J. Sullivan issued the opinion and order, stating that no rational jury could conclude that Oakley reasonably feared himself at risk of wrongful physical contact by MSG personnel. The court further noted that while the incident occurred in front of approximately 19,000 spectators and numerous cameras, Oakley conceded that no witnesses corroborated his claims of being pushed to the ground. This dismissal represents the third time the court has tossed the case, which was initially filed following Oakley’s arrest and removal during a February 2017 game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The legal trajectory of this dispute has been volatile. After the initial dismissal in 2020, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals twice revived the case, suggesting in 2023 that the reasonableness of the force used by security was a question for a jury. However, the latest ruling by Judge Sullivan concludes that the evidence, including video footage and witness testimony, does not support the plaintiff’s allegations of assault, false imprisonment, and defamation.

MSG’s Response and Future Legal Intentions

Madison Square Garden officials confirmed the dismissal in a statement, characterizing the claims as dismissed “in their entirety.” The organization announced plans to pursue legal action against Douglas Wigdor, Oakley’s attorney, and his law firm. MSG’s statement alleged that the firm engaged in years of frivolous litigation and a blatant abuse of the judicial system.

Wigdor expressed disappointment with the court’s ruling, maintaining that conflicting accounts of the 2017 incident necessitate a jury trial. The legal team indicated it hopes the Second Circuit will remand the case for a third time, though the current dismissal stands as a significant barrier to further litigation.

The Impact of Public Feuds on Professional Legacy

The conflict between Oakley and Dolan has persisted in the public eye for nearly a decade. Despite the legal animosity, there have been efforts to reconcile the player with the franchise. Reports from nypost.com in 2025 indicated that the Knicks organization expressed a willingness to welcome Oakley back as a celebrated team alumnus, provided the lawsuit was dropped. While an initial ban imposed by Dolan in 2017 was eventually lifted, the ongoing litigation served as a persistent tension point for the organization’s relationship with its 1990s-era roster.

A Precedent for Future Venue Disputes

As the legal system closes the door on this nine-year saga, the focus shifts back to the legacy of the players involved.
