Charles F. Porter, House and Bones Actor, Dies at 47 After Long Cancer Battle
Charles F. Porter, an actor and producer recognized for his appearances in television series such as Dr. House and Bones, died at the age of 47 on Monday, November 2, at his home in Calabasas within Los Angeles County.
A Seventeen-Year Battle With Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
The actor lost his life following a battle of seventeen and a half years against Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer affecting the lymphatic system, according to details confirmed by his wife, Candice Tab-Porter, to The Hollywood Reporter. At the time of his death, he was accompanied at his home by his wife, his sister-in-law, and his best friend and former Duke teammate, William L. Hill.
Porter was born on March 13, 1979, in Oxford, United Kingdom, before moving to the United States at the age of three. Before his acting career took shape, he attended Duke University to study cultural anthropology and played college football for four seasons. A severe back injury ended his athletic ambitions, prompting a move to Los Angeles in 2002 to pursue performance and production.
Securing Roles in Television and Feature Films
During the 2000s, Porter secured episodic roles across various television programs, including The Parkers, Close to Home, Sin rastro, Bones, and House. In 2011, he took on his most prominent leading television role portraying Wendell Scott, the first African American driver to win a NASCAR Cup race in 1963, in the ESPN telefilm Wendell Scott: A Race Story.
His work on screen extended into feature films with appearances in Nailed in 2006, 2014’s Battered, and the 2018 action thriller Peppermint, released internationally as Matar o morir, where he appeared alongside Jennifer Garner. In addition to acting, he established Black Bench Productions, through which he produced independent films centered on faith and family, including BET+ holiday titles such as A Miracle Before Christmas in 2022 and Christmas Angel in 2023.
Final Projects and Family Legacy
Porter’s recent work included producing and making a cameo appearance in the 2025 film Finding Faith, which starred Paula Patton. He also completed his work as an executive producer and investor on the upcoming feature Last Meals, which features Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Tessa Thompson, and Michael Shannon.
Outside of film and television, Porter modeled for the Italian edition of Vogue and Adidas, published three books of poetry, and worked as a youth sports mentor. He is survived by his wife, Candice Tab-Porter, with whom he shared eighteen years together, and their two daughters, Layla Rose, 9, and Juliette Jasmine, 6.

In a public statement shared on Instagram on November 2, his wife wrote about his resilience and integrity. “Charles me enseñó a estar presente, a vivir el momento y a disfrutar de toda la belleza que la vida tiene para ofrecer,” she shared, adding that he viewed his long medical battle as simply part of their path.
