Charles Barkley Praises Tom Izzo After Michigan State’s Sweet 16 Win | NCAA Tournament 2026
Charles Barkley vigorously defended Michigan State coach Tom Izzo’s demanding coaching style Saturday following the Spartans’ 77-69 victory over Louisville in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Barkley, a CBS, TBS, and TNT analyst for the tournament, asserted that Izzo’s approach is essential to the program’s consistent success.
“His teams never underachieve,” Barkley said during the broadcast. “It’s actually a beautiful thing to watch. … They play a certain way, and you have to play his way.”
Barkley’s comments came in response to criticism leveled at Izzo for his often-stern interactions with players. He argued that such directness is a hallmark of effective coaching, particularly in the high-stakes environment of college basketball. “He’s one of the few coaches who can still yell at his players,” Barkley stated. “We got these babies out here now… The media – who don’t know anything about sports because they never played – say, ‘Why is he yelling at his players?’ That’s called coaching. He cares.”
The veteran coach has led the Spartans to 27 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a national championship in 2000, establishing himself as a fixture in the sport. Izzo is known for his passionate defense of his players with officials, but likewise for holding them accountable for mistakes, a trait Barkley specifically highlighted.
Barkley went further, suggesting that players who are averse to rigorous coaching may be better suited for other programs. “If you don’t want to be coached, you probably shouldn’t come to Michigan State,” he said. “If their parents and friends get mad because you’re getting yelled at, you need better parents and better friends.”
Michigan State advanced to the Sweet 16, where they will face the winner of the UCLA-UConn game. The Spartans overcame a challenging season, including losses to Michigan and UCLA, to reach this stage of the tournament. Izzo’s coaching has been credited with the team’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure.
