Changwon‘s ‘Big Tree’ Observation Deck Faces Public Criticism Before October Debut
Changwon, South Korea – The newly unveiled “big Tree,” an artificial tree observation deck in changwon Grand Prize Park, is drawing sharp criticism from residents ahead of its scheduled opening in October. The structure, a private advancement project spearheaded by Hyundai E&C, was opened to the public for initial feedback, revealing widespread disappointment with its aesthetic and design.
The observation deck, intended to be a landmark for the city, has been met with comparisons to “hair loss” and calls for notable improvements. Citizens like Choi Dal-hwan of Bonglim-dong expressed concerns about the structure’s appearance, suggesting extensive trimming and refinement. Kim Nami, also of Bonglim-dong, echoed these sentiments, stating that further completion and supplementation are needed.
Despite the negative reception, Changwon City officials maintain that opening the structure in October remains feasible. Jeong Gyu, of the Changwon Park Greenery Division, stated that the current state allows for opening and that the design incorporates feedback from public debates. This stance has fueled further criticism, as residents question the city’s willingness to address the concerns raised.
The Changwon City Council has acknowledged the issues and pledged to actively collect and respond to public opinion. Lee Jung-hee,a member of the council, confirmed that adjustments are being considered. However, with less than two months until the official opening, concerns are mounting that the city is prioritizing the completion of the project over addressing its fundamental flaws.
the “Big tree” project represents a ₩5 billion (approximately $3.7 million USD) investment by Hyundai E&C, donated to the city. The project aims to enhance Changwon Grand Prize Park, a popular recreational space for residents and tourists alike. The park, located in Seongsan-gu, Changwon, spans over 1.3 million square meters and hosts numerous events throughout the year.
