CFL Commissioner Demonstrates Commitment to french Language Support

Toronto, ON – Canadian Football League (CFL) Commissioner Stewart Johnston signaled a new era for the league on Monday, demonstrating a tangible commitment to its French-speaking fanbase by addressing the media in both English and French. The move goes beyond upcoming rule changes slated for 2026 and 2027, highlighting a broader effort to increase inclusivity and engagement within Quebec.

JohnstonS bilingual press conference marks a significant shift, reinforcing statements made during a visit to Percival-Molson stadium in May.At that time, he emphasized the importance of French language support for the league’s future, stating, “It is very significant for me because it is also important for the future of the league.”

The CFL is also planning to increase French-language content across its platforms, including social media, with a particular focus on the Montreal market. “I am very steadfast to offer French-speaking content, particularly in the Montreal market,” Johnston said during his Montreal visit. “We have a strategy in place for the French-speaking market, on the various platforms, for the Alouettes matches, those of red and black and those broadcast nationally in both languages. This is a key element for us.”

These efforts align with planned rule changes designed to increase excitement and action on the field, aiming to broaden the league’s appeal. Monday’s actions demonstrate the commissioner is backing up his words with concrete steps to acknowledge and respect French-speaking supporters in Quebec.
