St. Louis, Missouri – May 21, 2024 – A series of severe weather events, including widespread
tornadoes and flooding, has ravaged communities across the Midwest, impacting areas in Kansas, Kentucky, and Missouri. Beginning in mid-May, the storms have resulted in severe property damage, numerous injuries and tragically, loss of life. The devastation is prompting emergency responses, with Catholic Charities and other organizations mobilizing to provide relief, as we’ve learned from officials and on-the-ground reports.

Kansas Church Miraculously Spared Complete Destruction
In Grinnell, Kansas, the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church faced a direct hit from a powerful tornado on May 18. Despite the devastation,a Facebook post from the Diocese of Salina noted a sign of hope: The roof was ripped off,yet the candles burned on.
The diocese urged prayers for the affected community,highlighting the resilience of faith in the face of adversity.
Kentucky Grapples with Widespread Devastation and Loss
Kentucky bore the brunt of the storm system, with southeastern counties experiencing widespread devastation. Laurel County reported 17 deaths, while Pulaski and Russell counties each reported one fatality.Gov. Andy Beshear, after witnessing the destruction firsthand in Laurel County, pledged support for the affected communities. I promise that we will be there for our people until every home and every life is rebuilt,
he stated. And I want to thank all our heroic first responders for the work they’ve done over the past few days.

Solidarity and Support from the Diocese of Lexington
Despite being at the Vatican for Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration Mass, Lexington Bishop John E. Stowe issued a message expressing solidarity with those affected by the storms. I greet you from Vatican City were I bring your prayers and congratulations to our first pope from the US!
he said. I also share in the loss and sorrow of all who lost lives and homes in the devastating tornadoes in Laurel and Pulaski Counties.
Bishop Stowe also highlighted the ongoing need for support,noting that collections were already being taken for flood relief efforts.Even as we are taking up collections this weekend in solidarity with those affected by flooding, yet another natural disaster strikes.let us do all we can to provide help, hope, and healing.
Catholic Charities Steps Up Relief Efforts
Shelli Gregory, executive director of Catholic Charities of Lexington, reported that 20 of the diocese’s 50 counties were already under FEMA declarations due to earlier flooding. Catholic Charities has been actively engaged in disaster relief since the february floods, focusing on long-term recovery efforts. Gregory explained.
Gregory also noted that while none of the churches sustained damage, some parishioners were personally impacted by the tornadoes. Catholic Charities is working to ensure survivors have access to vital services, including hot meals and crisis cleanup registration.
Missouri Faces Extensive Damage in St. Louis
Missouri also suffered significant damage, with st. Louis experiencing two confirmed tornadoes that damaged over 5,000 homes and buildings.Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of St. Louis reported an overwhelming surge of requests for assistance. We are seeing a heartbreaking level of need, and our ministry is here to respond with urgency and compassion,
said Jared Bryson, president and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Requests for help are pouring in – and we are doing everything we can to meet each one with dignity, care, and concrete support.
Catholic Charities is mobilizing emergency resources to provide temporary housing, food, counseling, and long-term recovery assistance.
Economic Impact and recovery
accuweather meteorologists estimate the preliminary damage and economic costs caused by the multi-day severe weather outbreak to be between $9 billion and $11 billion. The road to recovery will be long, but communities are demonstrating resilience and unity in the face of adversity.
