Celtics vs Sixers: 3 Keys to Evening the Series Without Embiid

by Emma Walker – News Editor

BOSTON – The Boston Celtics continued their impressive run with a dominant 148-111 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday, but face a different challenge tonight as they host the Philadelphia 76ers without Jayson Tatum and with Joel Embiid sidelined for the Sixers. Tatum remains out as he recovers from a right Achilles tendon injury sustained last May, ending any speculation of a return for Sunday’s contest.

Philadelphia’s absence of Embiid significantly alters the dynamic. The 76ers’ offensive rating drops from 121.3 to 113.9 when he’s off the court, a substantial decrease that Boston will aim to exploit. With Embiid and Paul George (serving a suspension) unavailable, the offensive burden falls heavily on Tyrese Maxey.

Despite Tatum’s continued absence, the Celtics have surged, winning five of their last six games. Their recent performance included a historic offensive showing against Brooklyn, where they shot 66.7% from the field and 64.7% from three-point range, achieving the highest effective field goal percentage and true shooting percentage in a single game in NBA history. However, Philadelphia has historically presented a tougher defensive challenge, holding the Celtics to 30.2% from three-point range in their three prior meetings this season while shooting 38.7% themselves.

The Celtics’ roster has undergone significant changes since those earlier matchups. Players like Minott and Simons are no longer with the team, and Vucevic has moved into the backup center role. Scheierman, listed as questionable due to a left thumb fracture, has become a key contributor, averaging over 25 minutes per night in the last 10 games. His potential absence would require Mazzulla to adjust the rotation, potentially giving more minutes to Ron Harper Jr., Walsh, and Gonzalez.

The matchup between Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey will be pivotal. Both players are averaging 29.1 points per game, tied for fourth in the league. In their three previous encounters this season, Maxey averaged 29 points, 5 rebounds, and 6.5 assists against Boston, while Brown posted 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Brown’s recent form, including 28 points on 12 shots against Brooklyn, demonstrates his ability to lead the offense effectively, while Maxey’s relentless drive and scoring ability pose a significant threat.

Derrick White is expected to be a key defensive component for Boston, tasked with containing Maxey. The Celtics’ depth at the guard position, with Gonzalez and Walsh providing support, offers versatility in defending Philadelphia’s ball-handlers. Without Embiid’s presence to provide a safety net, Boston’s defense could capitalize on turnovers and transition opportunities.
