Celine Dion has revealed a recent health scare prompted the cancellation of her planned performance at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, in May. The singer, who has been privately battling health issues since 2022, disclosed the new setback in a statement posted to social media on Monday.
Even as Dion did not detail the specific nature of the latest health challenge, she confirmed it was separate from the ongoing neurological condition, Stiff Person Syndrome, that led her to postpone and ultimately cancel all of her scheduled concert dates. “I was incredibly excited to be part of this event and I had been working hard to receive ready for it,” Dion wrote. “Unfortunately, my health issues have made it impossible for me to travel and perform at this time.”
The Eurovision Song Contest’s executive supervisor, Martin Österdahl, expressed disappointment at the cancellation but emphasized support for Dion’s health. “We are incredibly sad to learn that Celine Dion won’t be able to join us at the Eurovision Song Contest this year,” Österdahl said in a statement. “Her health is the most important thing, and we wish her a speedy recovery.”
Dion’s team swiftly addressed reports circulating following the announcement, dismissing claims of further speculation regarding her participation in the contest. According to The Mirror, Dion’s representatives labeled such reporting as “false.”
The announcement follows the recent conclusion of Dion’s eleven-year residency at The Colosseum in Las Vegas, which ended in early March. Reports indicate Dion celebrated the end of the residency with a late-night party, continuing until 3 AM, according to Metro.co.uk. This event occurred before the emergence of the latest health concern.
Dion first publicly revealed her diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome in December 2022. The rare neurological disorder causes progressive muscle rigidity and spasms. The condition has significantly impacted her ability to perform, leading to the cancellation of numerous shows and tours.
The singer had been slated to perform a specially composed song during the Eurovision grand final. No replacement performer has been announced.
