Cecil Taylor Unit: Live at the KiMo Theater Albuquerque 1979
Cecil Taylor reshaped the boundaries of modern music through a career spanning from the mid-1950s until his death in 2018, performing at major venues including Carnegie Hall and the White House while dismantling traditional jazz structures.
Archival Recording Surfaces from 1979 Albuquerque Performance
Live at the KiMo Theater Albuquerque 1979 captures a recently uncovered live set from the Cecil Taylor Unit that was originally intended for broadcast on NPR. Although the recording never reached the airwaves at the time, its initial consideration for mass distribution highlights the pianist’s visibility as an atonal artist during a defining era for improvised music.
The performance documents a significant transitional phase for the ensemble. Alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons maintained his position in the unit from the mid-1960s until his death in 1986, and violinist Ramsey Ameen had performed with the group for two years prior to this concert. However, the rhythm section underwent notable changes for the New Mexico date. Alan Silva, a Paris expatriate who previously performed on two Blue Note albums with Taylor during the 1960s, returned to play bass and cello. Meanwhile, percussionist Jerome Cooper made his debut appearance with the unit during the KiMo Theater engagement.
Musical Range and Critical Perspective on the Piano Style
Writer Val Wilmer described Taylor’s instrument as eighty-eight tuned drums in the book As Serious As Your Life, a frequently cited observation regarding the percussive nature of his approach. Yet that critical focus often obscures the broader dynamic range present across the 1979 recording. Taylor moves between heavy lower-register figures and rapid upper-register runs while maintaining a delicate sensibility rooted in early Duke Ellington influences, bearing resemblance to the phrasing found on Ellington’s 1960s Money Jungle sessions.

Lyons counters these aggressive piano passages with wailing refrains that anchor the performance in traditional jazz idioms. As the intensity of the performance increases, those bebop and blues references dissolve into interlocking musical patterns.
