California Winegrape Growers Fund Research to combat Devastating Pests
SACRAMENTO, CA – December 2, 2025, 08:17 PST – The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s (CDFA) Pierce’s Disease and Glassy-winged Sharpshooter (PD/GWSS) Board is actively soliciting research proposals through its Research and Outreach Program, offering significant funding to projects aimed at mitigating the threats posed to the state’s vital winegrape industry. The program, financed by a dedicated assessment paid directly by California winegrape growers, represents a proactive investment in the long-term health and sustainability of a multi-billion dollar agricultural sector.
Pierce’s Disease, spread by the Glassy-winged Sharpshooter, remains a significant economic risk to California vineyards. The disease obstructs water-conducting tissue in grapevines, ultimately killing the plant. This funding initiative is critical for developing innovative strategies to control the sharpshooter population and enhance grapevine resistance, safeguarding the livelihoods of growers and preserving California’s reputation as a world-class wine producer. Successful projects will receive awards ranging from $4,300 to $383,000 annually, with project durations spanning one to three years.
The CDFA PD/GWSS Board’s Research and Outreach program operates on a reimbursement basis, distributing funds through invoices for actual, incurred expenses. Payments are made in arrears and are contingent upon the timely submission of both progress and final project reports. To ensure accountability and project completion, ten percent of the final 12-month award amount will be withheld until an acceptable final report is received.
This funding source is specifically tied to the financial contributions of the California winegrape industry, demonstrating a collective commitment to research and outreach efforts. Interested parties can find further details and submission requirements through the CDFA website.
