Cardinals Shatter Programme Records at Marlins First Chance Meet
LANDOVER, MD – The Catholic University Cardinals delivered a dominant performance at the Marlins First Chance Meet on Saturday, rewriting the program’s record books in multiple events and showcasing early-season strength. Several athletes achieved personal bests and secured top finishes,signaling a promising indoor track and field season for the team.
The Cardinals’ success at the meet extends beyond individual accolades, solidifying their position as a competitive force within Division III athletics. These early-season achievements build momentum for the upcoming Cardinal track & Field Classic,hosted by Catholic University on january 17th,and lay a foundation for potential championship contention.
Freshman Bridgid Cavanaugh made an extraordinary collegiate debut, finishing fourth out of 15 competitors in the one mile with a time of 5:26.89. in the 400 metre, junior Mia McConnell achieved an indoor personal best of 1:01.08, securing sixth place out of 15 and earning the tenth-best program performance in the event.
Alexa Grassi excelled in the 800 meter, finishing third overall and first among Division III runners with a time of 2:23.36. Cavanaugh followed closely behind, placing sixth overall and third for Division III with a time of 2:31.46.
the 200 meter saw Kortney Clipper record a personal-best time of 26.55, establishing her as the fourth-best performer in program history.Sarah Schumacher (26.66) and Erin Buckley (26.87) also achieved personal bests, securing the fifth and eighth spots, respectively, in the event’s record books.
The Cardinals concluded the day with a second-place finish in the 4×400 relay,with a time of 4:14.35, recorded by Rachel Sprauer, Kate Hannan, Alicia Vo, and Grassi.
