Meta Platforms Inc. Announced a multi-year partnership with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) on Tuesday, securing access to up to 6 gigawatts of GPU capacity as the social media giant diversifies its artificial intelligence infrastructure beyond its current reliance on Nvidia.
The agreement, which includes a potential equity stake for Meta in AMD, signals a significant shift in the AI chip market and a deliberate effort by Meta to reduce its dependence on a single supplier. Under the terms of the deal, Meta plans to begin deploying an initial one gigawatt of AMD GPUs in the second half of 2026, with custom chips optimized for Meta’s specific AI workloads. The total potential commitment of 6 gigawatts is equivalent to the power needed for nearly 4.5 million homes, according to Meta.
The partnership extends beyond GPUs to include AMD’s 6th Generation EPYC CPUs, positioning AMD as a key technology partner for Meta’s AI development. The financial terms of the deal are complex, incorporating performance-based incentives that could allow Meta to acquire up to 160 million shares of AMD, representing approximately 10% of the company, contingent upon meeting specific milestones related to chip shipments and AMD’s stock performance. The first tranche of shares will vest upon the shipment of the initial one gigawatt of chips.
News of the agreement sent AMD shares soaring, jumping roughly 10% in trading Tuesday morning. The deal represents a major win for AMD as it seeks to gain ground on Nvidia, which currently controls an estimated 84% of the AI and data center market share. AMD recently secured a similar agreement with OpenAI in October, committing another 6 gigawatts of AI chips to the AI research company.
“We are proud to expand our strategic partnership with Meta as they push the boundaries of AI at unprecedented scale,” said AMD CEO Lisa Su in a press release. “This partnership places us at the center of the global AI buildout.”
Meta’s move comes as the company intensifies its own AI research and development efforts, competing with industry leaders like Google and OpenAI in the pursuit of advanced AI systems and artificial general intelligence. The demand for substantial computing power is a critical factor in this race, driving Meta to seek alternative sources for AI chips. The company has not commented on the financial value of the overall agreement, but analysts estimate it could exceed $100 billion over the duration of the multi-year partnership.
