Dutch footballer Sherida Spitse Casparij is using her platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, most recently drawing attention with a gesture of solidarity after scoring against everton earlier this year. casparij kissed a wristband displaying the colors of the transgender community, sparking both support and criticism.
Casparij’s outspokenness comes as inclusivity in professional sports remains a meaningful issue for LGBTQ+ athletes and fans. Her actions are part of a broader effort to “level the playing field” for equality, a campaign she actively supports as an ambassador for the LGBT Foundation. The visibility of LGBTQ+ allies within football can have a profound impact, fostering a more welcoming environment and encouraging others to speak out.
“That is the action to which I have had the most reactions. A lot of positive ones, incidentally.Of course they are always of a negative nature, but it was quickly flooded with people who supported me. that was very nice to see,” Casparij said, reflecting on the response to her gesture.
Acknowledging individual differences in comfort levels with public displays of support, Casparij emphasized the importance of respecting personal boundaries. “Everyone does their own thing. One is a bit more introverted, the other a bit more extroverted. Some may not want that attention at all, that’s okay. it touches and makes me emotional, so I would like to do something with that.”
The Dutch national team is preparing for upcoming practice matches against Portugal on Friday in Braga (8:45 PM CET, NPO 3) and South Korea on Tuesday in Waalwijk (8:45 PM CET, NPO 1 Extra). Both matches will also be streamed live on NOS.nl and the NOS app.
