Casademont Zaragoza Threatens to Block Aday Mara NBA Debut Over Contract Dispute

Casademont Zaragoza Threatens to Block Aday Mara NBA Debut Over Contract Dispute

October 16, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

A dispute between Casademont Zaragoza and center Aday Mara threatens to delay the player’s NBA debut with the Oklahoma City Thunder as the regular season approaches, eurohoops.net reported. The aragonese club maintains that it holds the player’s federative rights and plans to block any international transfer authorization until a financial agreement regarding his departure is reached.

Casademont Zaragoza Opposes Aday Mara Transfer

Casademont Zaragoza announced that Aday Mara has a valid contract in force for the 2026-2027 season, according to a club statement cited by eurohoops.net. The organization stated that it has not received any international transfer request and that, should one arrive, the club will formally oppose its clearance. The team previously communicated this position to the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), FIBA, the NBA, and the Oklahoma City Thunder following the June 2026 NBA Draft.

The conflict traces back to August 2023, when Mara, then 18 years old and developed in the Zaragoza youth system, decided to terminate his contract unilaterally to move to the United States. While Zaragoza asserts the original agreement extended through 2027, the player committed to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Because the NCAA operates outside the FIBA ecosystem and does not recognize its rules, international transfer certificates are not required for collegiate play. Consequently, Zaragoza did not condition that initial departure on a transfer document, choosing instead to pursue its legal rights through the courts.

Aday Mara Wins NCAA Title Before NBA Draft

After spending two seasons at UCLA, Mara transferred to the University of Michigan. Playing for the Wolverines, he captured the NCAA national title in 2026, becoming the first Spanish player in history to achieve the feat. Following that collegiate championship, he entered the June 2026 NBA Draft, where the Oklahoma City Thunder selected him 12th overall in the first round.

During the 2026 preseason, Mara averaged 13.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.2 blocks per contest. He also participated in a preseason tune-up against the Houston Rockets, recording six points and nine rebounds in an 116-89 defeat. He also made his debut for the senior Spanish national team under Chus Mateo in August during qualification windows in Zaragoza against Portugal.

Transfer Dispute Threatens Oklahoma City Thunder Season Start

The unresolved transfer situation places immediate pressure on the center’s availability. The Oklahoma City Thunder are scheduled to open their 2026-27 regular season campaign against the San Antonio Spurs at the Frost Bank Center.

Casademont Zaragoza reiterated in its official communication that while it wishes the player success in his new professional challenges, it maintains an obligation to protect its contractual interests and enforce active agreements through necessary legal avenues.
