Carrick to Take Man United on Ireland Training Camp After Saudi Friendly Plans Fall Through

March 25, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Manchester United’s first-team squad will travel to the Republic of Ireland in early April for an intensive training camp, as manager Michael Carrick seeks to prepare his players during the international break. The camp, scheduled to run from April 6 to 9, comes after discussions regarding a mid-season friendly in Saudi Arabia were ultimately shelved.

The move addresses a three-week gap in United’s schedule, created by their elimination from the FA Cup and the pause for international fixtures. Their next competitive match is at home to Leeds on April 13. According to sources close to the club, the training base will be located approximately 30 minutes outside of Dublin.

Carrick, appointed as head coach in January, has overseen a period of relative stability at Old Trafford, securing 23 points from a possible 30. While the managerial position is not yet permanently his, the training camp represents an opportunity to further solidify his influence and tactical approach ahead of a crucial run-in to the season.

The decision to hold the camp in Ireland follows the collapse of plans for a mid-season friendly in Saudi Arabia. While the financial incentives of such a fixture were considerable, logistical challenges and potential scheduling conflicts ultimately proved insurmountable.

Players not involved in international duty will continue training at Carrington until Thursday, with academy players supplementing the squad. Following this, they will be granted a weekend of rest before reconvening in Ireland. This approach reflects Carrick’s emphasis on managing player workload and avoiding burnout.

Securing Champions League qualification remains a key objective for Manchester United. Friday’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth highlighted the need for improvement, and Carrick will hope the intensive training camp will provide the necessary focus and preparation for the remaining fixtures. The camp is intended to galvanize the group and provide a change of scenery as they push for a top-four finish.

Former Premier League manager Tim Sherwood has questioned whether Carrick would accept the permanent managerial role if offered, suggesting circumstances would need to align for both parties. The club has not yet commented on the timeline for a permanent appointment.
