Carrefour Belgium Launches ChatGPT Shopping Assistant
Carrefour Belgique Tests ChatGPT for Grocery Shopping
Shoppers in Belgium can now build grocery lists, check local store inventory, and place delivery orders directly inside ChatGPT through an integrated plugin launched by Carrefour Belgique, retaildetail.be reported. The system connects customer requests to local stock databases and links directly to a Carrefour Bonus Card account for home delivery or store pickup via Drive.

- Carrefour Belgique launched a ChatGPT plugin allowing full grocery list creation and ordering.
- The assistant accesses local store inventory and syncs with the customer’s Carrefour Bonus Card for delivery or Drive pickup.
- Executives aim to study shifting consumer search behaviors from keywords to conversational queries.
Agentic AI Shifts Consumer Search Habits
The retail distributor does not expect millions of users immediately, according to Jean-Philippe Blerot, digital and e-commerce projects manager at Carrefour. Instead, the company wants to observe how agentic artificial intelligence modifies search and purchasing behavior. Initial data from the first weeks of deployment show that while customers remain traditional and mostly request standard grocery lists, search patterns are shifting away from isolated keywords toward complete conversational sentences.
Shoppers frequently input complex requests such as planning menus for specific group gatherings or rebuilding previous orders with minor modifications like adding water and raclette cheese. Matthieu Ullens and Jean-Philippe Blerot are scheduled to demonstrate the interface and video workflows at the “AI in Retail” event in Brussels on November 19, ahead of the RetailDetail Night.

Suppliers Must Optimize for Generative Engines to Maintain Visibility
When users share conversational histories, the AI builds familiarity with dietary preferences, brand loyalties, and choices favoring organic items or high protein content. Blerot noted that suppliers will need to optimize for Generative Engine Optimization to maintain visibility as large language models increasingly function as personalized nutritional coaches. Customers stand to save roughly an hour by bypassing traditional manual shopping aisles entirely once trust in the automated workflow is established.
