Carolina Basketball: Dean Smith Center Updates & Arena Future Discussed

February 25, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Chapel Hill, NC – The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is grappling with the future of the Dean E. Smith Center, its iconic basketball arena, as officials acknowledge past communication failures and begin a series of listening sessions to gather input from the Carolina basketball community. The discussion, unfolding on a new segment of the “Carolina Insider” podcast titled “The Arena Discussion,” comes as the 40-year-old facility faces increasing demands for upgrades and a changing landscape in college athletics.

Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham admitted the university “dropped the ball” on initial communications regarding potential renovations or a new arena, leading to a public backlash and vocal opposition from prominent figures like former head coach Roy Williams and star player Tyler Hansbrough. “From October of ’24 until just prior to Christmas ’25, we didn’t do that,” Cunningham said, referring to a lack of outreach to key stakeholders. The university is now attempting to rectify the situation with stakeholder groups comprised of former players, students, and donors, holding listening sessions that began in December 2025.

Chancellor Lee Roberts emphasized the need to balance tradition with modernization, stating, “The world is changing rapidly around us… Nobody else can touch the legacy of Carolina basketball, but that incredible legacy can sometimes craft it hard to react as quickly as you need to when the world is changing.” He highlighted the significant investment required to maintain the Smith Center, citing needs ranging from a new roof and updated bathrooms to accessibility improvements and concessions upgrades.

According to Roberts and Cunningham, three guiding principles are shaping the decision-making process: upholding the legacy of Carolina basketball, maximizing the program’s competitive advantage through top-notch facilities, and delivering a great fan experience. Roberts noted a 20-year decline in student attendance at games, expressing a desire to increase student presence closer to the court to enhance the home-court advantage. “This program belongs to our students,” he said. “We want more students in the arena closer to the court… giving the students a reason to come to the games and cheer loudly for the Heels.”

Financially, building a new arena would cost $20 million less than renovating the existing Smith Center, Cunningham revealed during the podcast’s inaugural episode. However, he stressed that the decision is not solely economic. “It’s not just an economic decision,” he said. “We need to seize more time due to the fact that there’s an emotional component to this, a logical component to it, and there’s a financial component to it.”

The discussion comes as UNC officials recognize the Smith Center’s current amenities fall short of contemporary college athletics standards. The university is also considering the possibility of relocating the arena off-campus, potentially to Carolina North, a move that has generated significant resistance. The podcast series, hosted by Jones Angell and Adam Lucas, will continue to address the evolution of Carolina Basketball and the future home of Tar Heel basketball, with new episodes released regularly on Wednesdays.
