Bexar County Students Gain Career Clarity Through New ‘Career explorers’ Pilot Program
Bexar county, TX – A new pilot program, “Career Explorers,” is guiding middle school students toward potential high school pathways aligned with in-demand local industries, offering a proactive approach to workforce development. Launched this fall, the initiative aims to connect eighth-graders with career opportunities before they begin selecting high school specializations.
The program addresses a critical need for early career awareness in a rapidly evolving job market. By exposing students to fields like healthcare, technology, and advanced manufacturing, Career Explorers seeks to bridge the gap between education and employment, ensuring a skilled workforce for the future. The initiative is particularly vital in Bexar County, where demographic shifts and economic growth demand a prepared and adaptable talent pool.
Career Explorers, a collaboration between the San Antonio Report, the Alamo Academies, and local school districts, recently completed its first phase with students from Harlandale and Southside ISDs. The program utilizes interactive workshops, site visits to local businesses, and mentorship opportunities to provide a hands-on learning experience.
“We want students to start thinking about thier future now, not when they’re seniors,” said Sarah Zayas, director of the Alamo Academies. “This isn’t just about telling them what jobs are available; it’s about showing them what those jobs look like and the education required to get there.”
During the pilot, students toured facilities like Methodist Hospital and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, engaging with professionals in various roles. They participated in simulations and problem-solving activities designed to spark interest and build foundational skills.
The program’s success hinges on continued funding and expansion.Organizers are actively seeking donor support to extend Career Explorers to additional school districts and broaden the range of career pathways offered. The next phase aims to incorporate more virtual reality experiences and personalized career counseling.
