Cape Town Businessman Kidnapped, Tortured, and Rescued: Nine Arrested in Brutal Crime
South African law enforcement authorities have arrested nine suspects following the rescue of a 51-year-old businessman who had been held captive and subjected to torture in Saldanha, on the West Coast. The operation, coordinated by the Western Cape South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Kidnapping Task Team, culminated in a raid that freed the victim and dismantled an alleged criminal syndicate.
The Rescue Operation
The victim, a Cape Town-based businessman, had been abducted previously, prompting an intensive intelligence-driven investigation. Police tracked the perpetrators to a property in Saldanha, where the businessman was discovered in a state of distress, having sustained various injuries during his captivity. Medical personnel were dispatched to the scene to provide urgent treatment for the trauma he endured.
The tactical intervention led to the immediate apprehension of nine individuals. Among those taken into custody are a mother and her son, both residents of Khayelitsha, who are alleged to have played specific roles in the kidnapping and the subsequent abuse of the victim. Authorities have indicated that the investigation into the suspects’ involvement is ongoing, with forensic teams processing evidence retrieved from the site of the rescue.
Legal Proceedings
The suspects were processed at the Saldanha police station before being transferred to regional holding facilities to await their first appearance in court. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that the group faces a range of charges, including kidnapping, extortion, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Provincial police leadership described the operation as a significant disruption to organized criminal networks operating within the Western Cape. The Anti-Kidnapping Task Team, which was established specifically to address the rise in ransom-related crimes across the province, continues to analyze digital evidence and communications seized during the arrests to determine if the syndicate is linked to other unsolved disappearances.
Institutional Response
The Western Cape police commissioner’s office has stated that the investigation remains in an active phase. Detectives are currently working to identify potential additional accomplices who may have facilitated the logistics of the kidnapping or provided the location used to hold the victim.
The nine suspects are scheduled to appear before the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court to face the initial charges brought by the state.
