Thousands of Nova Scotia Power customers across Cape Breton faced notable power disruptions on Sunday. The utility implemented temporary shutdowns to conduct essential repairs, aiming to restore electricity safely. While many experienced outages on Saturday, a planned outage on Sunday affected several communities, including Whycocomagh, Chéticamp, Inverness, Mabou, and Baddeck.

The planned power interruption began at noon Atlantic Time and was anticipated to last two hours. However, restoration efforts continued past the initial timeframe. Nova Scotia Power confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, that the additional outage was necessary to ensure a safe and complete power restoration for all impacted residents and businesses.

Impact on Communities

The outages coincided with the busy Inverness Gathering weekend, causing considerable inconvenience. Bonny MacIsaac, warden for the Municipality of the County of Inverness, noted that some businesses were forced to close their doors. The disruption notably affected essential services,with the only grocery store in Inverness remaining closed for a period.
