Football players in white and purple uniforms on the sidelines; player 25 runs with the ball while a teammate (#16) cheers"

Canyon Defeats Hereford 52-7 in District Opener

October 11, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Canyon opened its District 2-4A Division I football schedule with a 52-7 victory against Hereford on Friday night at Whiteface Stadium, leaning on a relentless ground game that generated 420 yards rushing.

Eagles Establish Control Early in District Opener

The Eagles (5-1 overall) established momentum immediately on the opening drive, marching 58 yards across seven plays before Austin Turner pushed across the goal line from 5 yards out. Following a quick Hereford three-and-out, quarterback Brox Hacker rolled right and located Will Killgore in the back of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown pass. That sequence pushed the Canyon lead to 14-0 within the first five minutes of the contest.

Tripp Miller expanded the margin on the ensuing possession by taking a sweep around the corner and sprinting down the sideline for a 65-yard touchdown. Our game-plan was to come out fast behind doing what we do and that’s run the ball, Lovorn said after the game. We changed up some offensive packages and the run game got going in a hurry. Miller finished with 77 yards on three carries before departing in the third quarter due to an injury.

Whitefaces Counter with Flexbone Adjustments

Hereford dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in district play as first-year coach Matt Medley deployed flexbone concepts for the first time this season. The tactical shift caught the Canyon defense off balance in the second quarter. Zack Galvan broke through the middle for a 45-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 21-7 with 6:49 remaining in the half.

Lane Burton answered for Canyon with a 41-yard field goal to extend the lead to 24-7. Hereford attempted to mount another scoring drive before halftime when quarterback Bennett Bell completed a 36-yard pass to Brix Machen down to the Canyon 19-yard line. Officials negated the play due to an illegal touching penalty after ruling that Machen stepped out of bounds before returning to the field. Medley contested the ruling, arguing that Canyon defenders pushed Machen toward the boundary, which resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that pinned Hereford deep in its own territory and ended the half.

Second-Half Surge Secures the Victory

Canyon put the game out of reach on its opening possession of the third quarter. On the third play of the drive, Jaylyn Keith took a trap handoff and scampered 45 yards for a touchdown, making the score 31-7. I liked how we came out and put the game away in the second half, Lovorn said. What I really like is our depth at running back. We’ve been developing those guys and we wanted to make sure we had several backs that can go and not just run one guy all the time.

Keith finished the night with 68 yards rushing and a touchdown. Turner led all rushers with 180 yards on 15 attempts, while also anchoring the defensive unit from his linebacker position with 10 total tackles and an interception. Hereford was limited to 189 total yards of offense, with Galvan pacing the Whitefaces with 84 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Hereford continues its district schedule seeking consistency from its developing roster. Medley noted the resilience of his squad despite the final score. We have great flashes of brilliance, Medley said. I know the scoreboard may not show that, but we ran some flexbone concepts in this game for the first time all season and I thought the guys executed it well for not doing it in a game. What I’m most proud of, is this is a team that doesn’t quit.
