Canisius Women’s Lacrosse Dominates Manhattan 18-3 | 3 Hat Tricks
The Canisius Golden Griffins defeated the Manhattan Jaspers 18-3 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse action Saturday at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.
Three Canisius players – juniors Maddie Fitzgerald and Ashlyn Dhandwar, and freshman Ella Forcucci – each recorded hat tricks, propelling the Golden Griffins to their first conference win of the season. Canisius improved to 7-2 while Manhattan fell to 1-9 and 0-1 in MAAC play.
Junior Megan Previdi led all players with six points, scoring two goals and assisting on four others. The performance also marked a milestone for Previdi, as she reached 100 career points. Juniors Bridget Brown and Harper Weatherdon each collected a game-high three ground balls.
Canisius graduate student Isabel Gautreaux delivered a strong performance in goal, making 13 saves on 16 shots for a season-best .813 save percentage. She held the Jaspers scoreless in the first half.
For Manhattan, Lauren Maher was involved in all three of the Jaspers’ goals, scoring twice and assisting on a goal by Audrey Ziff. Naomi Aristone won a game-high six draw controls, as Manhattan held a 15-8 advantage in draw controls.
The Golden Griffins began the game with a dominant 10-0 run, sparked by a goal from sophomore Leah Pfeiffer 3:46 into the contest. Six different Canisius players scored during the run, with Pfeiffer, Previdi, Fitzgerald, and Forcucci each finding the net twice before halftime.
Manhattan scored two quick goals early in the second half, but Canisius responded with an 8-0 run of its own, extending its lead to 18-2 with 7:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. Manhattan scored a late goal to end the drought, but Canisius closed out the victory.
Saturday’s game was the 27th all-time meeting between Canisius and Manhattan, with the Golden Griffins now holding a 16-11 record in the series. Canisius has won 15 of its last 17 contests against the Jaspers, dating back to 2008.
Canisius has scored 15 or more goals in six games this season and has reached double-digit goals in 12 consecutive games, extending a streak that began last season. The team has also limited opponents to single-digit scores in four games this season.
Previdi is the second Canisius player to reach 100 career points this season, joining senior Meg Hiltz, who achieved the milestone on March 5 against Mercyhurst. Junior Maddie Fitzgerald is 11 points away from reaching 100 career points herself.
Canisius will next host Quinnipiac on Wednesday for its first home conference game of the season. The opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m. At the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y., and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
