Cancer Research Updates: Quebec Conference Demystifies the Disease

March 22, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

A conference titled “Cancer: New Discoveries” drew a curious and engaged audience to the Laure-Conan Library in La Malbaie, Quebec, on Saturday afternoon. The free event, organized by Centre Déclic, aimed to bridge the gap between scientific research and the public, fostering dialogue on a complex disease.

Mélanie Laurin, professor in the Department of Molecular Biology, Medical Biochemistry and Pathology at Université Laval and researcher at the CHU de Québec Research Centre, presented alongside science journalist Valérie Levée, who moderated the discussion. Laurin’s research focuses on cancer, specifically distinctions between aggressive and less aggressive forms of skin cancer, with the goal of identifying biomarkers to refine treatment strategies.

Despite pleasant spring weather, a significant number of citizens attended, eager to learn. “It’s always impressive to notice the quality of the questions and the desire to understand from people who are engaged and interested,” Laurin said.

The conference’s central objective was to demystify cancer and explain the science behind it. “We want to explain what cancer is, why there are so many different forms, and why it’s so complex,” Laurin explained. “But, most importantly, we want to indicate that there is hope through research.”

Laurin highlighted recent advancements in cancer research, including the growing understanding of immunotherapy and the role of the microbiome in cancer development. These areas are paving the way for more personalized medicine, tailored to the unique characteristics of each patient. She noted the importance of understanding the differences between cancer types to better target treatments.

The discussion likewise addressed common misconceptions surrounding cancer, particularly regarding diet and alcohol consumption. Laurin emphasized the challenges of interpreting scientific studies and the prevalence of misinformation. “People are very informed, but there are still many myths,” she said. “The challenge is often the interpretation of studies.”

Centre Déclic’s mission is to create spaces for exchange between scientists, and citizens. “We want to create opportunities for encounters and allow the public to ask their questions,” Levée explained. “That’s why we dedicate a significant amount of time to the question-and-answer period.”

The format appeared to be effective. Participants readily engaged with questions, ranging from basic inquiries to more nuanced and specific points. “The questions come naturally, sometimes very pointed, sometimes more fundamental,” Levée observed. “It shows that people want to understand.”

Content is prepared by science journalists to ensure accessibility for all levels of knowledge. This approach encourages public engagement, regardless of prior scientific background. Centre Déclic organizes conferences in various settings, including libraries, festivals, and community organizations, both online and in person, and they are generally free to the public.

The next Centre Déclic conference, focusing on birdwatching in Charlevoix, is scheduled for April 11th at 10:00 a.m.
