Canadiens vs. Islanders: Caufield’s Hat Trick Fuels 7-3 Win | NHL Hockey
MONTREAL – Cole Caufield scored a hat trick and Juraj Slafkovsky added two goals as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the New York Islanders 7-3 on Saturday at the Bell Centre. Kaiden Guhle broke a tie in the third period and contributed two assists, solidifying the Canadiens’ lead.
The Canadiens overcame a 2-1 deficit and weathered a prolonged period of pressure in the second period. They broke a streak of Ilya Sorokin remaining undefeated against them, scoring six goals against the Islanders’ goaltender, ultimately leading to his removal from the game after facing 32 shots.
“It was frustrating to play a really good first period but be down on the scoreboard, even though we controlled the play for the majority of the time,” Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki said. “And the second period was frustrating, but we scored two huge goals at the end of the period.”
Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis praised his team’s resilience. “The guys were saying the right things on the bench. They were telling each other to keep going, not to worry about the score,” he stated. “We have a group that has a very good mental strength. People can’t control everything, but if we control our emotions, it’s going to help us control the rest.”
Caufield finished the night with three goals and two assists, while Slafkovsky recorded two goals and two assists. Suzuki contributed four assists. St-Louis highlighted Slafkovsky’s all-around performance. “He did everything tonight,” the coach said. “He was physical, he was winning puck battles, he was making plays, he was going to the net. He checked all the boxes, and we need that from him. He has the skills to do everything.” St-Louis added that Slafkovsky is showing “good progression” this season.
Alex Newhook also scored for Montreal (38-21-10), and Jacob Fowler made 19 saves for the win. For the Islanders (39-26-5), Emil Heineman, Simon Holmstrom, and Matthew Schaefer scored. David Rittich stopped three shots in relief of Sorokin.
The Islanders initially took the lead with a goal from Heineman during a power play at 6:46, responding to Slafkovsky’s opening goal for Montreal at 4:10, also on the power play. Holmstrom then gave the Islanders a 2-1 advantage at 13:19.
The second period saw the Islanders dominate early, with an 8-0 shot advantage in the first half. Mathew Barzal hit the post during a power play, and Schaefer had a goal disallowed for being above the permitted height. Despite the pressure, Newhook tied the game at 2-2 with 2:11 remaining in the period, followed by Caufield giving Montreal the lead with 51.9 seconds left, again on the power play.
Schaefer equalized for the Islanders early in the third period, scoring 45 seconds into the frame. Guhle restored the Canadiens’ lead at 3:17 with a shot that deflected off an Islanders player. Slafkovsky extended the lead to 5-3 at 8:08, completing a play started by Suzuki and Caufield. Caufield then scored his second goal at 11:20 and completed his hat trick at 14:59, both on the power play.
The Canadiens will next face the Carolina Hurricanes at the Bell Centre on Tuesday.
