Lane Lambert Reflects on the Fierce Nordiques–Canadiens Rivalry
SEATTLE,WA – A recent quirk in the NHL schedule has sparked nostalgic memories of the Quebec Nordiques, even as the team hasn’t existed for over two decades. The presence of former Nordiques players on opposing coaching staffs – specifically, Lane Lambert of the New York Islanders – has brought the storied franchise back into the spotlight.
Lambert, currently an assistant coach, was spotted in Seattle this week, prompting reflections on his 89 games played with the Fleur-de-lis jersey between 1987 and 1989. He readily shared his recollections of his time in Quebec City, particularly the intense rivalry with the Montreal Canadiens.
“The rivalry with the canadiens was very, very special, and this blue sweater is superb – one of the moast stunning,” Lambert said with a nostalgic smile. The Nordiques’ jersey remains an iconic symbol of hockey passion in Quebec.
The Battle of Quebec
Tho his tenure with the Nordiques was relatively brief, Lambert experienced firsthand the electric atmosphere and fierce competition that defined the “Battle of Quebec.” He vividly remembers the 1987 Adams Division Final, a series that remains etched in his memory.
“I have a lot of memories, and they’re not all good,” Lambert chuckled. “We lost Game 7 at the Forum, 5-3. I remember it very well.” Despite the heartbreaking defeat, lambert emphasized the profound impact of being part of that rivalry.
“But being involved in the Battle of Quebec and having played this series is extremely rewarding. It was fun, and it’s a memory I will never forget,” he concluded. The rivalry, known for its intensity both on and off the ice, continues to resonate with hockey fans decades later.
The Nordiques relocated to Denver in 1995,becoming the Colorado Avalanche, but the legacy of the franchise and its rivalry with Montreal endures.
