Overnight Phone Charging: Experts Say Its Generally Safe, But Choose Your Charger Wisely
Riga, Latvia – Concerns about damaging smartphone batteries by charging them overnight are largely unfounded, according to experts, though the quality of the charger is critical. The debate continues, but modern smartphones are equipped to manage overnight charging safely, provided a certified power source is used.
Experts state that leaving a phone plugged in overnight won’t cause significant harm, especially if the device is relatively new and intended for replacement within a few years.Modern smartphones feature built-in controllers that monitor temperature, current, and voltage. Onc the battery reaches 100% charge, power delivery is automatically halted, resuming in short cycles when the level dips below 95%.
Both Apple and Samsung confirm the safety of overnight charging. Apple states iPhones manage their own power supply, while Samsung refers to the practice as “floating charging,” asserting it doesn’t negatively impact battery health even with continuous connection.
While fast charging can slightly increase device temperature, experts say it doesn’t reach dangerous levels. They also note the benefit of manually disconnecting the charger once full is minimal. More detrimental to battery life is exposure to high temperatures – exceeding 35 degrees Celsius can reduce battery capacity.
Though, a study by the British organization electric Safety First revealed that 98% of cheap, non-certified chargers failed basic safety tests. These chargers often lack essential protective components and insulation, possibly causing dangerous voltage fluctuations – ranging from 5 to 240 volts – capable of damaging a smartphone or creating a short circuit.
Therefore, overnight charging is permissible, but only with an original or certified adapter and under normal operating conditions. Avoiding placing the phone under pillows or blankets to prevent overheating, and steering clear of dubious power sources, is strongly advised. https://nra.lv/pasaule/503548-sieviete-vanna-mirst-no-elektrotraumas-lietojot-telefonu-uzlades-laika.htm
