Can Craftsman 20V Batteries Work With Other Tools? Compatibility Explained

February 25, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

The Craftsman brand, now owned by Stanley Black & Decker, is navigating a landscape of battery compatibility questions as its V20 power tool line gains traction among DIY enthusiasts. While the brand promotes the interchangeability of batteries within its V20 ecosystem, questions have arisen regarding their employ with tools from other manufacturers.

Stanley Black & Decker acquired Craftsman from Sears in March 2017, a move that followed Sears’s bankruptcy filing in 2018. Despite the sale, Sears retained a limited license to continue selling Craftsman tools under its own brand, while Stanley Black & Decker assumed control of the brand elsewhere. This arrangement led to a legal dispute, with Stanley suing Sears over the launch of the “Craftsman Ultimate Collection,” alleging concerns about how the department store was marketing the new tools.

The core of the current debate centers on the V20 battery platform. Lithium-ion battery packs are generally not cross-compatible between brands, even at the same voltage, without the use of adapters. However, a search on Amazon reveals several off-brand tools – including an LED flashlight from Edtran, a cordless paint sprayer from HaopkZapyr, and a cordless soldering iron from QSDXNYDC – that explicitly claim compatibility with Craftsman’s V20 batteries.

While the compatibility claims of these lesser-known brands haven’t been independently verified, industry experts caution against mixing batteries from different manufacturers. Proprietary designs often prevent a secure and efficient connection, potentially leading to safety issues and reduced performance for both the battery and the tool. The risk extends to using adapters, as third-party adapters may not meet the same safety standards as original equipment.

Stanley Black & Decker, as the parent company of both Craftsman and other power tool brands like DeWalt and Porter-Cable (acquired in 2004), has a vested interest in maintaining the integrity of its battery platforms. The 2010 merger of Stanley Works and Black & Decker created the current conglomerate, solidifying its position as a leading hand tool manufacturer.

Given the potential risks, opting for official Craftsman V20 tools remains the most reliable approach for users seeking guaranteed compatibility and performance within the V20 system.
